Notebook Hard Drive Caddy FAQs

What is a hard drive caddy?

Most notebook computers with come with removable hard drives that are unique to the specific manufacturer.  The hard drive is housed inside a metal or plastic tray known as a caddy or bracket.  Caddies are often incorporated into the overall design of the notebook computer with the bottom or side of the caddy being flush with the rest of the system's chassis. This allows the user to quickly pop out the caddy for fast access to the hard drive.  It permits the user to maintain multiple hard drives with different applications or different operating systems.  It also is great for classified data environments, where the a hard drive with caddy can be stored securely away from the computer.

Do I need a caddy if I just want to upgrade my existing notebook hard drive?

Most notebook hard drives are secured to the caddy with screws.   The screw holes in the caddy align with mounting screw holes on the hard drive.   Unfortunately, in 1998, the manufacturers of notebook hard drives changed the screw hole alignment pattern on all of the newer hard drives (typically 2.0GB and larger).   Therefore, the newer hard drive mounting holes do not align properly with many of the original manufacturer's caddies.
